Counted cross stitch pattern by Faby Reilly |
|
"Biscornu beauty: If you love pincushions and biscornus, then this delightful new colour chart designed by Faby reilly is a must for you. 'Apple blossom' is oh-so pretty and it's created with whole cross stitches and backstitch so it's relatively simple too."

Introducing the Easy-Mount Mini Bag
We're trilled here at Creative Poppy when there are new project ideas that we feel will add excitement to cross stitch. One of the reasons Biscornu shapes have become so popular is that they use the "biscornu method" for mounting the stitched pieces together. It's so neat and forms a beautiful line. There's actually no sewing involved, you just whipstitch your way along two lines of backstitch. And the beauty is, it's totally fool-proof. As you are following a precise number of stitches, you're guaranteed to end up with a perfect shape.
Now we are introducing a new fun shape in the form of an Easy Mount Mini-bag. We hope you will like it. We tried to perfect the shape so that the bag has a nice structure, fully lined but not complicated to put together. And using the "biscornu method" of assembly, yet again, it's fool-proof. Your bag will be the perfect shape, over and over again.
Perrette Samouiloff is the first to offer a pattern with this shape. We are hoping more designers will follow soon so that we will have a whole collection of mini bags: they are so cute and just perfect as gifts, filled in with little goodies.
Check out our free tutorial on our stitcher resource page and do send us a picture of your first bag (use our contact form to send it). Any comments or suggestions are also very welcome.
There are 4 lovely patterns that are designed to fit the bag. But they will also be perfect for many other shapes.

Primitive folk art inspiration with Barbara Ana
In total contrast to the patterns above, the gorgeous subdued earth tones of the Valdani artisan overdyed floss lend an antique feel to these new designs by Barbara Ana. We love the way the designer draws her inspiration in primitive folk art, yet joyfully mixes old and new, adding her very own personal touch to these patterns.

A Swiss Poya pattern by Tam's Creations
Living so close to the mountains, it's no surprise that Tam should be inspired by her beautiful Alps. The Poya is the traditional ascent of the cows up to their summer pastures and the theme plays an important role in mountain folk art. Here Tam's Creations has transposed it into cross stitch.
This project might take a certain time to stitch but the end result is stunning.

How music and memories can inspire needlework projects...
Behind each of Kathy Bungard's designs (Gracewood Stitches) there's always an underlying story. Take the One May Night design, and discover how memories, fragrances and even moonlight inspired this amazing pattern. Lydia, seller of purple is a totally different story with origins in biblical times!

A cosy home, a happy heart
Here are two new patterns from designer Gail Bussi (Rosebud lane). We like the way she focuses on the simple joys of life.
You'll enjoy stitching both pieces which involve a little bit of challenge (check out those intricate lace-lake doilies) but extremely rewarding once completed. The "little love nest" will make a lovely housewarming present for a young couple or family.

Finishing idea: Eat the chocolate but don't through away the box!
Have you received any lovely boxes filled with treats recently? Make sure you save the boxes and reuse them for making small gifts of your own (you can fill them with home made goodies too!).
All you need to do is cut out an extra piece of cardboard or foamboard the size of the existing lid. Add padding and cover, using the same technique as above, then glue onto the lid. Hide the sides with trimming, lace or ribbon.
The Alphabet bookmark and mini lace motif (pictured right) is perfect for stitching a personalized cover.

Patterns galore for Christmas needlework projects
Check out Perrette Samouiloff's latest pattern booklet: It features a combination of seven motifs that can be used for making needlework accessories in a variety of shapes such as scissor cases, scissor fobs and pincushions. Unlike most biscornu patterns where the pattern is repeated in the four corners, three of these patterns are designed to work along the diagonal of the square, so they can be used for making any cone-shaped objects such as scissor cases but also Christmas ornaments (see next topic below).
|
|
New shape idea: fill your Christmas ornaments with goodies
Try these cone-shaped hanging ornaments that can be filled with little surprises and hung on your tree. They work pretty much the same way as making a scissor case, except that you do not fold back the flap. These ornaments are really refined and pretty with a matching lining inside the cone - yet they are very easy to make, starting with a simple square, that is lined and then folded and slipstitched at the back. You'll have fun adding the jinglebells, pearl ornaments or tassels to the tapered end too.
The patterns by Perrette Samouiloff above are perfect for this shape, as well as any biscornu pattern that looks good diagonally.

Here's the latest pattern by Barbara Ana, a real cutie of a scissor fob with a fun Halloween theme. We just love the little black and purple laced boots! It matches the Owl-o-ween scissor fob that came out not long ago and the bootscornu (makes a handy pincushion).
Why not treat yourself and your friends to a few Halloween treats (like scissor fobs and biscornu pincushions)? There's no reason after all that just the kids should have fun!

Finishing ideas
We received this beautiful picture from Jane W. It is a reinterpretation of Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin's
Red monochrome Scissor and Needlecase pattern and her matching Biscornu pincushion.
This time however the Red DMC variations threads was substituted with a hand dyed floss, Cottage Garden Threads 'Damask Rose'.The result is stunning, with a very delicate balance of light brown and pink produced by the thread. There's a lovely tassel too, also with a mix of the two colors.
The fun with monochrome patterns like this one is that you can really play around with fabrics and colors and make your piece unique. Congratulations, Jane, and Thank you so much for sharing your photo with us.
