The pattern depicts the insurrection of the French people and the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, one of the events that led to the fall of the old order during the French revolution. The French flag initially appeared in the form of cockades, tricolor ribbons before reaching its final blue, white and red format.
The choice of motifs, the selection of colors, the seemingly irresistible forward movement of the people, the visual treatment of the buildings, everything contributes to a very powerful design, nevertheless imbued with great poetry.
There is a companion to this design, the Russian revolution (1917), Kyoko Maruoka actually having designed them as a pair.
