Eulalie Lautier 1853 Reproduction Sampler
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
In 1853, Eulalie Lautier is a young 9-year-old living in a village in Provence, in the South of France. She has most certainly already practiced cross stitch, like other young girls of her age, alphabets, borders and other various small patterns. Indeed this time, she tackles a more ambitious project: a pretty landscape almost filling the canvas. The pattern was probably taken from one of the early women's magazines of the time, or a booklet of patterns. Indeed, Meriem Chauvet, the designer behind Couleur Tourterelle and a passionate collector of needlework, has already located several works depicting this landscape precisely, with a few variations. You will find the results of this fascinating research together with the chart.
This is quite an achievement for a young girl of her age, with just a tiny detail betraying her inexperience, when she runs out of space for signing her work: hence letter "e" nested in the border.
The original sampler is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch and matches all colors of the original sampler (see original photo before last, last photo showing both side-by-side).).
Original Sampler worked in cross stitch, over 2 fabric threads. Reproduction Sampler stitched using Soie d'Alger silk from Au Ver à soie (AVAS) or DMC, with cross stitches worked over 2 fabric threads on 40ct linen. Size 6.7 x 6.1 inch (17 x 15,5 cm).
The design only features some cross stitches worked over one fabric thread, for the signature, you will therefore need to stitch it on linen or evenweave (not Aida).
