Antoinette Condé 1852 Reproduction Sampler
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
Antoinette was only 7 years old when she cross stitched this awesome sampler, a far cry from the works young stitchers completed to practice their first stitches. Indeed Antoinette selected a single large pattern, of the type known as "Berlin motif", picturing a little girl with whom she would surely identify, in the company of a dog.
As the research of Meriem Chauvet (Couleur Tourterelle's designer) shows, this needlework motif is in fact drawn from a hugely popular work by a German painter - who later became fashionable across royal courts of Europe. The identity of this little girl is revealed to you in the first pages of the cross stitch chart together with all the other interesting facts the designer uncovered regarding this pattern.
The original sampler is French, dated 1852, ans is part of Meriem Chauvet's personal collection of antique samplers. Colors of the original are particularly faded as you can see in the last photo (left), but the designer was able to restitute in the cross stitch reproduction (right) the original deep and vivid hues - red in particular - used in the original work, and still visible on the wrong side of the embroidery.
The original sampler is worked in half stitch. The reproduction pattern worked in cross stitch but can also be completed in half stitch.
The threads listed on the chart are Soie D'Alger silks from Au Ver a soie (AVAS). Worked over 2 threads, on 40ct linen, the embroidery measures 7 1/2 x 7 inch (19 x 18cm).
As the design only features full cross stitches, you can stitch it on any fabric of your choice, including over 1 fabric thread, or on Aida fabric.
