CROSS STITCH REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle

Célestine Leduc stitched the original work in “petit point” (half stitch) using wool on 25ct count fabric. The original sampler measures approximately 21 ¼ x 17 ½ inch (54cm by 44cm).

It is in very poor condition, the colors have been terribly damaged by light, but they can be seen practically intact on the wrong side of the stitched piece and they have been matched for use in the reproduction sampler.

The sampler is representative of late 19th century European samplers where richly colored tapestry inspired designs were starting to be available and stitchers picked motifs of their choice to embellish their samplers. This sampler features a lady and a gentleman in 18th century attire, surrounded by two parrots.

The stitcher was 10 when she completed her sampler, probably in her nearby school of Plessis-Grammoire. She would marry a man from her village 10 years later and live in the same place all her life, passing away at the respectable age of 94. 

The reproduction sampler (last picture) is also worked in petit point using the original colors visible on the back of the original sampler. It was stitched on a much smaller scale however, worked in 1 strand over 1 thread. It is however perfectly possible to stitch the piece over two threads.
