AG 1893 Reproduction Sampler

What makes this sampler particularly interesting is the little poem dedicated to the stitcher's parents. It is in French and would roughly translate as:

Dear beloved Parents

With joy and love

I gift you this work

Please accept it, and in return

Love me even more

Stitched in 1893, this sampler is representative of a special kind of work, "Compliment samplers", that became popular in France at the end of the 19th century paid. These samplers paid tribute and expressed gratitude to a loved one, usually parent, grand-parent, aunt or godmother.

Out of modesty, or because wanted to prioritize the ornamental part that accompanies the text, our young stitcher only signs her initials, yet in large decorative letters. She probably stitched the bird and fruit basket motifs before the text since she appears to have run out of space in the last verse, forcing her to split the text and even to work the last 4 letters of the word over one thread (petite stitch).

This sampler is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch and perfectly matches the colors of the original sampler (see last photo).

The original sampler (last photo) is stitched in wool on a linen fabric and measures 12.6 x 12.6 inch (32 x 32 cm). The reproduction is stitched using Soie d’Alger silk from Au Ver à Soie (AVAS), on 40ct linen. It measures  9 1/4 x 9 1/4 (23 x 23 cm).
