This design is by Kateryna, a cross stitch designer based in Ukraine, drawing her inspiration in folk tales and nature. The Spring Ukrainian Girl sampler features many references to the countryside and folklore, but above all it symbolises new life and joy. Everywhere birds are nesting in pairs or feeding their young. Two white birds with wings spread out seem to be raining drops of gold into the family nest, which is perched above a traditional carved wood hut roof. Nature is generous, trees are abundant with blooms and fruit.
The young girl in the center is wearing a long embroidered dress over a white blouse. Her hair is woven into a single braid, ukrainian style. From her turban head dress flows a light white veil suggesting she is getting ready for a celebration, maybe her own wedding.
