Jeanne Podebon 1906 Reproduction Sampler
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
The Jeanne Podebon Sampler is a perfect illustration of early 20th century needlework in France, with a very large and attractive alphabet, occupying almost half of the canvas, a central signature and then below various patterns picked in model booklets of the time, the whole piece framed within a large border motif.
The motifs are picked from the Sajou model leaflets published in France decades earlier (blue chart pictured). The stitcher adapted the motifs with her own choice of colors. The central Donkey and Dog design, refers to the La Fontaine fable, L’Ane et le Chien (The tale of the Donkey and the Dog) the moral of which is "we must help each other". This needlework motif was hugely successful in France and can be found in many samplers.
The two other motifs are also from a Sajou leaflet, on the left a Legion of Honor cross, the highest French decoration and a reward bestowed for outstanding service to the country, on the right, not to be mistaken for a regular steam boat, is a battleship, an armored warship with a battery of guns, which dominated naval warfare in the late 19th centuries.
A remarkable feature of this sampler is the clever use of double running stitch used for outlining the majot motifs of interest in a contrasting color so that they stand out. Both donkey and Jeanne signature's for instance are outlined in yellow. Extra chart pages are included for detailing motifs using double running stitch.
This sampler is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The original stitcher has been identified and traced back to the town of Châteauroux, in central France. The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch of the original sampler (second photo shows them side by side, orginal to the right).
