H. Kling 1934 Reproduction Sampler
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle

This is a charming example of needlework lessons carried on at school, with little girls practicing cross stitch borders and letters, and illustrated with a fable by Jean de La Fontaine, a 17th century French poet known for his fables, where animals mimic human behaviour. The Fox and the Grapes fable depicts a fox attracted to delicious looking grapes, but having failed to reach them, concluding that they were sour.

The fable's morality is that we often look for bad excuses to explain our failures.

The original was stitched using red cotton thread, on fabric with a woven red and blue square motif, popular with stitchers in the early 20th century, where the woven lines were used for delimitating and framing the needlework. The reproduction chart includes red and blue cross stitch outlines in order to mimick the woven lines of the original fabric.

While the reproduction sampler (pictured) was stitched over a single thread (3.7 x 3.3 inch - 9,5  x 8,5 cm), an alternative is also available over two threads (6.6 x 6 inch - 16,5  x 15 cm), like the original one.

This sampler is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch and matches all colors of the original sampler (see last photo).
