Blackwork Sunbonnet Sue
BLACKWORK PATTERN READY TO DOWNLOAD, DESIGNED BY Lesley Teare Designs
You'll be familiar with Sunbonnet Sue through quilting projects. Thanks to Lesley Teare, you now have the opportunity to feature Sunbonnet Sue in needlework projects, with this new Blackwork design.
Sunbonnet Sue is featured in full color. She's first seen tramping through the puddles carrying an umbrella and escorted by a duck. Next she's in a field of daffodils, a puppy at her feet. Two more designs show her surrounded by hens and cats. You can either stitch the pattern as a whole, or use each of the motifs individually. Each square will measure a little over 4 inch on 14ct so you could use them in a quilt, alternating with other motifs.
The piece is stitched mostly in DMC Stranded cotton floss, using a single strand for the backstitch. Red outlines can be worked either in Pearl cotton or in 2 strands of floss.
Like cross stitch, Blackwork is a counted thread technique, with stitches represented on a grid. A majority of stitches are backstitch, with some cross stitch filling certain areas. The chart comes with an extensive Stitching Guide detailing all stitches including fractional stitches.
