MS 1884 Reproduction Sampler
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
The sampler was completed in 1884. Yet, hadn’t it been dated, there would still be many elements in the design, such as the heavy gothic alphabet or the large flower border motifs, that would signal this French sampler as a late 19th century work.
The choice of motifs, on the other hand, is more anachronistic. Unlike contemporary samplers, our stitcher picked small motifs and added cheerful colors that had not been available before the introduction of woolen yarns.
The sampler is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch and matches all colors of the original sampler (see last photo).
Original Sampler (last photo) worked in cross stitch, in woolen yarns on canvas. Size 13 x 12 inch (32.5 x 30 cm).
When stitching the reproduction sampler the designer opted however for cotton, stitching with 1 strand over 1 fabric thread, resulting in a much smaller piece, as she enjoys the miniaturization effect of reproducing large woollen samplers in a much smaller scale.
Reproduction Sampler stitched using DMC (or Soie d'Alger - AVAST), with cross stitches worked over 1 fabric thread on 32ct linen. Size 8.6 x 8 inch (21.5 x 20 cm).
You could however stitch this piece over 2 threads of fabric or on any fabric of your choice, including Aida fabric, as the chart only includes full cross stitches.
