Focus on flower printed Aida
Stitchers are already familiar with printed needlework fabric.
Like dyed fabrics, printed Aida or linen can add a lot of appeal to the background of your stitching. Most printed backgrounds are quite subdued, but here is something completely different!
Now available in Europe, hopefully soon in the US, are new "Liberty style" flower print fabrics that create real exciting backgrounds for your stitching.
Designers have wasted no time to start stitching on those fabrics. Here are some interesting interpretations of patterns, each in a very different style. Enjoy!
Flower prints are available from DMC in the Impressions Needlework fabrics range.
Patterns with personality
True to her classic style, Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin, has designed a pattern inspired by traditional American quilts. This soft-colored and charming composition gently blends the floral print with the gingham motif of the stitching, resulting in a very textured effect.

By contrast, Catherine Deyts, the designer of Chouett'alors, decided to have some fun playing with the printed fabric and adding a little humor and color to a little frog design.
Here is a cute little frog, leaping out of an aquatic background. Thanks to the printed fabric, the waterlilies seem to be floating on the water and the blue and green tones of the print add color and cheerfulness to the stitching.
Tam's Creations is a well-known expert of Blackwork and has experimented with various techniques such as using multicolor threads for instance. This time she tried contrasting her fine lace-like stitching with the richly printed background fabric, with stunning results. Merged together, the stitching and the print create interesting texture and beautiful color effects. Try this on your next Blackwork project!

Stitching tips:
Not all patterns are suited for stitching on printed backgrounds. Here are some ideas that would work well on the kind of fabrics discussed here.
- Motifs with large "empty" parts, the print will serve as a "filler"
- Monochromes motifs, they usually bled well with a multicolor background.
- Silhouette shapes, simple outlines
- Patterns with a lot of text. gain, the backgound will enrich the stitching.
By contrast, avoid using printed backgrounds for detailed, complex motifs, using many colors.
When stitching on printed backgrounds, especially 14ct Aida, we suggest using 3 strands instead of two. You will get better floss coverage and you stitching will stand out against the fabric, particularly if you are stitching with light floss colors.
The patterns shown below are all stitched on flower printed Aida from DMC.
