SITUATION IN UKRAINE: Due to the war, and the gruesome situation in designer's home town, we are providing as much support as possible, and are donating an extra $1 for each pattern sold through Creative Poppy's website. You can help too by spreading the word about Kateryna's designs. Thank you! |
Cross stitch - the slavic way
One of the most amazing things about cross stitch, is that it is an activity beloved the world over. We cannot think of a country where there aren't any stitchers passionately working on their projects, stitch by stitch. And we find it all the more amazing when a designer, in a country at war, chased from her home town by intensive shelling, manages despite her terrible circumstances to continue designing, sustained probably by her passion for needlework. We therefore proudly present by Ukrainian designer Kateryna, this tribute to cross stitch inspired by the folklore of her homeland.

Harbinger of spring
With its restrained palette of browns yet discreet touches of cheerful yellow and green, this cross stitch pattern seems to be transitioning from Winter to Spring. An elegant design, perfect for bringing a light seasonal touch to your home. Pair it with some fresh daffodils!
Viennese elegance
Picture youself seated at this polished coffee house, being served by a courteous waiter, in tailcoat. All the fun in this cross stitch pattern is the way the designer substitutes humans with rabbits in this scene full of decorum.

Ukrainian Winter
It is not without a certain emotion that we received Kateryna's latest pattern, knowing what she is going through, living in an area that is regularly shelled with only intermitent electricity.
This is such a sweet pattern, with log-cabins huddled together and animals gathering to pay tribute to this young woman, oblivious to the cold, in a gown and head-dress fit for a queen.

Meet Baba Yaga
Ukrainian designer Kateryna (Stitchy Princess) is ever fascinated by her homeland's legends and specifically the character of Baba Yaga, a witch sometimes evil, sometimes kind, who lives in the magic forest. Her latest pattern portraits her riding her broom, in the company of her cat. Two owls look on, unperturbed.

New Tales of Baba Yaga
Present throughout East European folklore, and particularly in her native Ukraine, Baba Yaga is one of Kateryna's favorite caracters, depicted in numerous designs. An elderly witch, ugly and bony legged, enigmatic and unpredictable, alternatively really evil, or maternal, kind and helpful to the trouble hero.
As you enter the magical forest, trees comes alive moving their arms, animals behave strangely. Notice in the distance a wood cabin perched on chicken legs, occasionally turning round? It's the home of Baba Yaga.
Baba Yaga is never spotted without her cat. Even in the dark you'll always spot its yellow eyes.
Oh, she is a busy lady. Here she is preparing collecting mushroom to prepare her mysterious broth. Or serving tea from her Samovar.
But what she likes best is to unwind and relax in a bathroom fit for a ... witch! Even witches deserve a rest, don't they?
