In the designer's own words:
Inspired by the patterns of traditional East European embroideries, and using the classic black, red and blue of Hungarian cross stitch, I designed this strongly patterned square in a bold patchwork style. The border patterns rotate around the central square and the birds in each corner give some added interest.
You could work the central square with border alone to give a matching smaller cushion, perhaps, where you might switch the blue and red around for subtle variety.

This pattern reminds us of the traditional white blouses proudly worn by women at festivals and folk dances and which are still hand stitched with colorful motifs.
