Countryside reproduction sampler dated 1872
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER CHARTED BY MURIEL BERCEVILLE - COUNTED CROSS STITCH
The original piece, from Muriel Berceville's private collection is an antique sampler that was stitched in 1872 and is of French origin.
The piece was originally stitched on canvas using wool and silk threads. Parts of the motif are stitched over one thread, in petit–point, allowing for more detail (cross stitch over one weft and one warp thread).
When you look at the wrong side of the fabric, you can see that the original colors used were rather bright. When charting this pattern , Muriel Berceville preferred to pick colors closer to how they appear today, somewhat faded. A few adjustments were made to the composition to allow for symetry and more regular spacing but the overall “spirit” is very close to the original.
The central part is filled in several places with lists of 3 initials suggesting names of people and some sort of family tree. There are 14 "names" in total: a pair of 3 initials within each of the three flower wreaths, and four lines of 3 initials in the vertical spaces surounding the central wreath. The fact that the central wreath is in light colors may suggest the piece was stitched for a wedding, with the bride and groom's parents names in the wreaths on either side.
In the wreaths of her reproduction, Muriel Berceville stitched her own initials and the year the work was completed, using the second alphabet, miniaturized and worked over one thread. You could however personalize the design in many different ways. The original sampler featured the third, simpler and smaller alphabet. It is stitched over one so 2 pairs of initals will fit in each wreath and 4 series of initials will fit in the vertical spaces.
The reproduction sampler is worked in Au ver à soie (AVAS) Soie d'Alger Silk, DMC equivalence is also provided.
