Sailor Blue (Girls' Beach Fashion)
CROSS STITCH PATTERN READY TO DOWNLOAD, DESIGNED BY Perrette Samouiloff
Perrette Samouiloff celebrates Beach fashion of yesteryears and of today with this dual portrait of little girls at the seaside.
In the top part, cross stitched in navy blue, the little bathers of yore are all covered up, head and bodies protected from the sun with large beribbonned straw hats and buttonned up outfits down to their knees. The wind blows the hats and skirts of the little girls as they enjoy playing in the sand and the fresh air. As was fashionable in the 1900's and following decades, beach and bathing costumes were a feminine take on sailor uniforms, with wide collars, navy and white fabric, with plenty of frilly additions.
Today's little girls, cross stitched in lighter blue, are not much different. They too enjoy dressing up for a trip to the beach. They are freer to move, as they too stride along the beach with spades and buckets, their heads still protected with a pretty hat.
The text "Sailor Blue" alludes to the fact that sailor outfits still inspire today's beach fashion, reminding us, not without humor, that fashion is an eternal renewal. The chart for the original French text "Bleu marin" is also provided with the chart.
Once your stitching is complete, why not turn your work into a small banner (photo), and display in a child's room or a seaside house. You can also mount your work onto a large beach bag in matching fabric.
