Sun and rain have alternated. The garden's vegetable patch is in full splendor. The yellow flowers growing from the end of the leafly vines have gradually grown into the most amazing pumpkins, gourds, squash, kabotcha and more variations of them all, some round, some elongated, some yellow, some green and some orange. It's a beautiful sight!

Did you know the cucurbits (or Cucurbitaceae), of the gourd family, are a plant category with almost a thousand kinds of species, due to their propensity to generic variation. This explains why there are so many colors and shapes of the fruit. Indeed while from a culinary point of view they are vegetables, scientifically they are flowers that turn to seeds therefore fruit.

Designer Perrette Samouiloff includes some fractional stitches in the pattern, actually 3/4 cross stitches worked in a single thread, to create a contrast of coverage within the same tone of color. This is quite effective in rendering the roundness of the pumpkins, gourds and squash. While it is possible to stitch 3/4 cross stitch on Aida, the pattern is best suited for stitching on evenweave or linen fabric, over two threads.
