Blackwork (or Redwork) is a counted stitching technique based on backstitch. A blackwork pattern is shown on a grid, exactly similar to a cross stitch chart.

While traditionally used with black (or red) thread, Blackwork can produce very pretty effects when used in any color, or even several colors. Overdyed, variegated, multicolor and even metallic threads lend themselves beautifully to the technique.
