Spirit of the forest

Why do mushroom pop out mysteriously overnight? No doubt the work of the Spirit of the Forest, seen here appearing through the branches of a sturdy tree. A sense of melancholy emanates from this design shrouded in autumnal light. Vintage Barbara Ana, full of her favorite leitmotivs.

New Summer pattern by Barbara Ana

Amazing colors for this summer pattern by Barbara Ana, combining a terracotta fabric and a unique contrast of blue and brick. Order reigns on the left side of the pattern but in the shaded part, hair flows with the wind, morphing into waves with tiny sailboats and fish tossed about. Maybe a taste of what dreams are made of....

Seasonal companion

Following in the footsteps of Barbara Ana's Spring cat, here is its new companion, the Summer cat. Both are elegantly dressed in tight wasted ballooning dresses that form an "image within the image". It's amazing the amount of detail the designer has managed to fit into this bay view, with a clever use of light where distant sailboats and hot-air balloons only appear as silhouettes against the scorching sun.

Cat in Blooms

Colorful and whimsical as ever, Barbara Ana's Spring Cat is spreading her arms as if bearing an arch of flowers. She is wearing a crinoline shaped dress that blends into a countryside scene with oversize dandelion seeds blowing in the wind. Interestingly the rich and dense design is featured against a printed fabric mimicking a batik hand-dyed look.

There's a star (wo)man waiting in the sky...

Check out this new addition to Barbara Ana's Dreaming Girls collection, a vibrant tribute to David Bowie, inspired by his famous hit Stardust.

Look closely at the lovely details hidden in this pattern and the meticulous way in which the designer portrays our Starwoman, from her asymmetrical makeup to her flaming hair.

Psychic readings

Wearing the most amazing outfit of gold, precious stones, luxurious silks and feathers, and equiped with all the tools of the trade, from magic potions to crystal ball, Barbara Ana's fortune teller is deep in concentration, connecting with mysterious spirits, travelling into the cosmos searching for the clues to our destiny.

It is amazing how much detail designer Barbara Ana manages to fit into a concise cross stitch pattern. Textures are stunning too with plush effects rendered using a couple of simple cotton threads.

Oldies but Goldies by Barbara Ana Designs

Since day one when she starting creating cross stitch patterns just for the fun in the mid 2000's, Barbara Ana never stopped. Her humor, her creativity, her curiosity and her sense of fun are endless. Here's a compilation of the patterns she first created, dozens and dozens of them... still relevant today!

The space invaders are back

New by Barbara Ana, a gorgeously designed dreaming girl, body and mind dissolving into the cosmos, together with a playful hint at the little pixel monsters that haunted the 1970's, when early video games appeared.

The Dreamer is the bigger sister. Her sibling is the first Cosmic Dreams design. Why not stitch them as a pair?

Retrofuturistic Fashion

Enjoy the ride! Barbara Ana takes you onto another wild and whimsical ride, combining her interest into weird trends - Steampunk anyone? and her own favorite leitmotifs (hat and sunglasses a late addition). Each new design seems to be moving on from the previous, always with an interesting tweak. Here the background fabric, evocative of steam plays an important role in the design.

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!

A delightful new Christmas cross stitch pattern by Barbara Ana, portraying her favorite in Santa's awesome team of reindeer. Lady Dancer is pictured wearing a warm woolen sweater, red of course. Powdery snow is falling from her antlers where a tiny village is nested. The date 1823 featured in the cross stitch medallion refers to the year the author of the poem, Clement Clarke Moore, wrote the story initially titled A Visit from St. Nicholas.

Whimsical, vintage Barbara Ana.

Lights shine in the night. Come close and discover the most extraordinary creature, a stylish deer, clad in a 1970's vintage jacket, face white in the moonlight and wearing a head dress, with luminous lanterns and silver droplets hanging from her antlers in a halo of light.

We're all Mad Here

SAL subscribers will have recognized her. Here is Barbara Ana's female version of Alice in Wonderland's Mad Hatter. Drinking tea and wearing an oversize green hat, with price tag still attached. Any resemblance stops here though and the rest is left to the designer's imagination.

Portrait of a lady

Lady squirrel seems to be posing for a painting, actually a cross stitch pattern by Barbara Ana. We love the contrast between the aqua blue of the dress and the natural colors. The light variations in color of the dress are achieved through the use of a nuanced thread from the DMC Color Variations range.

Initially introduced in steps as an SAL, this design is now available as a whole pattern. Part of the amazing Dreaming girl series, she has grown colorful wings and turned into a butterfly. In between her delicate antenna is a tiny hat carrying her sunshades.

A dreaming Girl in a different light

Talking of another dreaming girl, we received from Nona J. this wonderful picture of her Dreaming girl reappearing as Peter Pan's Wendy Darling. We love it when stitchers reinterpret and reappropriate a design. Nona switched background colors,  which gives the piece a very different look, and accompanied her piece with a quote from Peter Pan: "Second Star to the Right, then Straight on till Morning".

The alphabet that she chose to be "Pan-worthy" is from a Better Homes and Gardens hardcover book of "Alphabets and Borders", page 151, "Elegant Swerve Alphabet".

This is not Nona's first reinterpretation of a Barbara Ana Design. She also turned Dreaming of Klimt into the Queen of Sheba (check her out in Barbara Ana's news section below)

Fiery Night

An amazing tribute by Barbara Ana to impressionnist painter Vincent Van Gogh and his world-known Starry night. The designer manages to recreate in cross stitch the movement, colors and vision of the tormented artist, blending in her own images, brighlty lit homes and a dreaming girl with hair raising like flames.

Dreaming of Klimt - revisited as the Queen of Sheba

We love it when a stitcher is inspired by a pattern, and turns it into a unique work. Here is a wonderful idea shared by Nona J. who was inspired by one of Barbara Ana's designs:

"I tried a couple of variations with Klimt.  I stitched on a 7 ct. aida so she would look kind of like a tapestry.  As I worked, I wanted to give her an identity, so she became the queen of Sheba.  It is very imperfect and looks coarse from the 7 ct., but I like the way it reflects Klimpt's own contrasting quirks....using precious, fine gold, yet painting in unpredictable blocks of color.  I also used a shiny rayon thread for jewel tones and after watching a documentary on Klimt, painting over gold leaf, I infused quite a bit of metallic gold thread.  Just thought you'd enjoy a glimpse.  It's not perfect, but I love her.  Happy creating, Nona J."

Thank you so much Nona for sharing such a wonderful idea!
