Brought to you by Lesley Teare, expert cross stitch designer but also a specialist and great lover of birds, this is a brilliant portrait of a woodpecker.
The bird is resting on a broken tree trunk - the exact place a woodpecker would pick to prick insects out of the half rotten bark. It is featured sideways, showing its profile and the beautiful curves of its beak, neck and chest. The part featuring the black and white dorsal feathers is extremely detailed, with lovely rendering of the complex way they fold together when the bird is resting. Notice the striking way the eye is depicted in needlework, using a combination of cross stitch, fractional stitches and backstitch. It almost looks alive, a sure proof of the designer's expertise.
The surounding motifs are treated in a completely different manner, with the leaves and berries surrounding the bird, stylised and simplified, in contrast to the main motif. Further blending into the distance is the floral frame, mostly smaller cross stitch motifs, except for two butterflies in blackwork.
The cross stitch pattern includes a couple of fractional stitches for detail. A tutorial is included with the chart for all stitches.
