Flowers and Goldcrest
BLACKWORK PATTERN READY TO DOWNLOAD, DESIGNED BY Lesley Teare Designs

Here is a new series of Birds in Lesley Teare's signature style where she mixes cross stitch - for color and detail - as well as blackwork, actually in color, for decorative effects. Both techniques are counted thread techniques and charted on the same grid, blackwork as lines similar to backstitch, and cross stitch using regular symbols.

New to this series is the way the motif is inscribed in a circle, with each corner filled with color, which contributes to the whole color effect. As for all Lesley Teare's bird designs, the depictions are quite realistic, proof that she is both a keen birdwatcher and an expert cross stitch designer. This is why the cross stitch parts include some fractional stitches for details of beaks and feathers which could not be achieved elsewise. This is also why the colour palette is large, with slight changes in the colors of blackstitch outlines, forming a subtle contrast with the bird's feathers.

The Goldcrest, knicknamed "Kind of birds", is a small passerine bird found all over Europe and parts of Asia. It has a distinctive band like golden crest, outlined in black, and vivacious black irises.

The blackwork motifs - actually worked in ranges of red - fill the petals of the surrounding floral wreath. Each petal features a different lace like motif, with the density of the pattern, and colors used, arranged in constrast.

The cross stitch pattern includes a couple of fractional stitches for detail. A tutorial is included with the chart for all stitches.
