Blackwork Flower with Wren

In this interesting stitched piece, a mix of blackwork and cross stitch, designer Lesley Teare blends two very different techniques of needlework into a single design.

 

The main flower , as well as the two smaller ones about to blossom, are stitched in a combination of intricate blackwork motifs in the designer's signature style. The motifs combine together like a patchwork of printed fabrics.

 

By contrast, the bird is beautifully rendered in cross stitch only. Branches in the background are stitched in solid colors.

 

The combination of techniques offers different levels of "reading"  the design, with the eye drawn to the intricate flower.

 

The colors of this design are subtle and delicately balanced. There is much color detail in the birds feathers and the Blackwork is slightly colored, therefore softly blending into the rest of the design.
