A playful explosion of colors

Here's a French sampler dated 1868, showing the traditional Linen-maid's alphabet, but with a special twist: in no fewer than 17 silk colors!

The original sampler is part of Meriem Chauvet's collection (the designer behind Couleur Tourterelle), and she loves to painstakingly reproduce and rechart antique samplers restoring them to their former glory. This one is a real treat to stitch!

Autumn joys

Often we walk by, oblivious to our surroundings, our head occupied elsewhere. But in some rare moments, beauty strikes us. The ivy is turning to red, beautifully shaped golden leaves are falling from the trees. Designer Samantha Purdy captures those simple joys of life - in cross stitch - in a series of very personal contemporary-style patterns. Her latest fall designs focus on those fleeting moments, when the beauty of nature captures our attention and we forget about everything else.

Autumn in the British countryside, by Lesley Teare

Here is a beautiful cross stitch sampler featuring a typical Georgian House in autumn, with a potted pear-tree featured prominently in the garden and surrounded by lawn where animals roam freely. It is part of a series of classic cross stitch samplers featuring each season.

Racing around the cauldron

Mice and a friendly ghost race around a log fire playing peek-a-boo while swirls of steam emerge from a bubbling cauldron. Have fun adding all the details on the cross stitch base, including an intriguing specialty stitch, as Faby Reilly takes you by the hand with her excellent tutorials.

An early 19th century English sampler, and a early 20th century French one

Thanks to Meriem Chauvet, the collector and designer behind Couleur Tourterelle, here are two charming reproduction samplers, that will let you reproduce the work of stitchers of yesteryears, and restitute the samplers to their former glory.

The samplers could not be more different, like the people of each country. But what they both have in common is their irresistible charm.
