December - Celebrate!
CROSS STITCH PATTERN READY TO DOWNLOAD, DESIGNED BY Gracewood Stitches
In the designers own words:
'December~Celebrate!' is stitched in the Assisi style of stitching only the background. All stitches are cross stitch.
This is the pattern for December's entry in the Calendar Collection of designs.
December, a month of parties and celebrations needs a special linen for such gatherings like this tea table cloth that reflects that joy when friends and family meet.
Creative Poppy says:
The beauty of Assisi embroidery that it provides texture, deep color and a dimensional effect to the finished piece (see close up in photo 4). It is quite straightforward with large areas cross stitched in a single color. It does requires time and patienceas large areas are covered, but is well worth the effort.
Tips:
- When stitching, work in blocks and avoid skipping on the wrong side of the fabric as this might show though.
- Use any solid color of your choice but avoid variegated or overdyed colors that may create stripe effects
Two designs in one
In the case of an Assisi designs like this one, you're actually getting two charts in one. You can actually cross stitch the negative or positive depending on the needs of your project.
The chart can indeed be read two ways, either the original pattern or the inverted pattern, i.e. only the stitches corresponding to the parts left empty on the chart.
This time it is the background fabric that will provide the dominant color. What we lose in texture, we gain in speed and especially in the ability to embroider on larger formats.
See (photo 5) the inverted motif stitched in red on natural raw linen background.
Gracewood Stitches "Celebrate" design is extremely decorative and versatile, with endless possible variations. Here are some fun project ideas.
Red Christmas table cloth and matching napkins
The table cloth is stitched on red linen* (or Aida). (Photo 6)
Work the inverted motif in white floss, right in its center.
For a square or rectangular table cloth, you can repeat the little cross stitch corner motifs in each angle to embellish the parts hanging on the sides.
* Zweigart offers Colorfast red linen sold by the meter in 140 cm wide
Matching white napkins:
Cross stitch the small corner motif in red, in one corner of the napkin, on white needlework fabric.
More Coordinated pairs
The beauty of this design is that you can easily create pairs: a table cloth and coordinated napkins, matching cushions or even display two finished works side by side, one inverted, for a contemporary decorative effect.
How about completely switching colorways?
Here are two elegant cushions that come in coordinated contrasting tones of white* and linen.
*antique white or cream
Using the inverted pattern, cross stitch one motif in white on raw linen fabric.
Work the second piece on white linen using a linen colored floss such as DMC 453 or any one that perfectly matches the other fabric.
