Josefa Gras y Garcia 1901 Reproduction Sampler
CROSS STITCHREPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
This early 20th century Spanish piece is a school sampler, used to teach young girls, in this case Josefa, to practice needlework. The red monochrome work includes two alphabets, numbers and various border exercises. In between the gaps are two discreet and adorable little animal motifs, a dog, and a little rabbit eating a carrot.
It is dated 1901, signed with the stitcher's full name, Josefa Gras y Garcia (Gras being the first family name of her father and Garcia the first family name of her mother), and preceded by "Lo hizo" which means "Made by" in Spanish. ,
The original sampler (two last photos) is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle . The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch - including border errors which add to its charm - of the original sampler.
Reproduction Sampler stitched using Soie d'Alger silk from Au Ver à soie (AVAS) or DMC, worked on 40ct linen. Size 11.6 x 8.4 inch (29 x 21 cm cm).
As the design only features full cross stitches, you can stitch it on any fabric of your choice, including over 1 fabric thread, or on Aida fabric.
