ED 1721 Dutch 18th century - Reproduction Sampler
CROSS STITCHREPRODUCTION SAMPLER PATTERN, READY TO DOWNLOAD, BY Couleur Tourterelle
This remarquable sampler featuring a prominent ship motif, is a reproduction of an original sampler that dates back to 1721, over 300 years ago. The original sampler (last photo) is part of the personal collection of Meriem Chauvet of Couleur Tourterelle and it is in excellent condition, with all stitches preserved although some colors have faded. You can now restore this sampler to its former glory thanks to the excellent recharting work of the reproduction sampler.
The sailboat's rigging is depicted in extraordinary detail, from the bowsprit, extending forward from the vessel's prow, to the lantern hanging at the back of the vessel. The are 4 hands on board, one climbing the stairs of the forecastle, the others having climbed up the mast or hanging from the rigging. The captain keeps a close eye, standing on the highest platform at the stern. Another man is standing nearby, possibly the ship owner.
Framing the top part is a lower-case gothic alphabet, in a single line forming the total width of the pattern. Pairs of birds are perched on trees, and you will also notice two tulips. You will learn - in the always interesting descriptions that come with all Couleur Tourterelle charts - that they are used as a symbol of love, and that the ship itself could be a reference to marriage.
The reproduction cross stitch chart strictly reproduces every stitch of the original sampler. There are a couple of shifted stitches only use for the lantern hanging at the back of the boat. These would have to be realigned if you wanted to stitch on Aida fabric or over a single thread.
Reproduction Sampler stitched using Soie d'Alger silk from Au Ver à soie (AVAS) or DMC, worked on 40ct linen. Size 6.9 x 6.6 inch (17 x 16.5 cm).
