Antique sampler of Swiss origin: "R.H. 1868"
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER CHARTED BY MURIEL BERCEVILLE - COUNTED CROSS STITCH
A moving and personal needlework sampler where the stitcher, probably a very young girl, expresses a sense of creativity and a great love of color. Signed RH, in 1868, the original sampler is of Swiss origin and was worked on canvas using wool thread.
Unlike similar works of the time, it is not framed by a border on all sides. Instead, the sampler is partitioned, with the upper level featuring letters and numbers traditionally used for needlework practice, and the lower section filled with a multitude of motifs including trees of life, crowns, baskets, a pitcher, glasses, two tables and in the lower right corner a motif that may be a wood stove.
The reproduction chart was worked using Silk thread Soie Surfine from "Le Ver à soie" (AVAS) and DMC floss equivalence is also provided.
