Antique sampler: "Maria Braillon 1877"
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER CHARTED BY MURIEL BERCEVILLE - COUNTED CROSS STITCH
This nineteenth century French sampler is an exceptional antique stitched piece from Muriel Berceville's private collection. It was stitched in wool on linen and it is remarquable that the sampler has kept its vivid colors until today. Indeed it is the bright colors that make this sampler so pleasant to reproduce in stitching.
The top part includes an alphabet, with cursive italic letters, actually stitched in two contrasting colors in order to emphasize the fuller parts of the characters. After letter "Z" are 3 small religious motifs, a sacred heart and a cross.
The sampler is signed "Maria Braillon 1877" in large bold letters.
The lower part is embellished with graceful baskets of bluebells and pansy. Two opposite border motifs, one with roses in bud, the other with stylised flowers, frame the work.
