Antique sampler: "Hélène Bonnefond"
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER CHARTED BY MURIEL BERCEVILLE - COUNTED CROSS STITCH
Muriel Berceville describes her work:
"Look for the personal details that have been added to this sampler, quite representative of a typical stitching exercise young girls would stitch in the mid 19th century. When charting this design, I tried to match the original colors and stay as close as possible to the original composition though the work of time makes it quite challenging."
The antique French sampler pictured on the cover follows the typical layout of young girls' works of the time, with alphabets & numbers in the top part, the lower part featuring symbolic motifs and two different borders framing the sampler. Young girls would pick motifs reflecting their moral and religious education as well as their surroundings. There are many references here to the Catholic faith (Cross, Sacred heart, angels) as well as Fleur-de-Lys, floral and bird motifs, and surprisingly an anchor.
