Making Miniature tassels Tutorial (the One-minute Mini-tassel)

Miniature tassel Tutorial
Try this! These mini-tassels are so cute and they only take about a minute to make!

Making mini tassels - list of materialWhat you need:

  • about a yard of floss (in as many colors as you want). Here we are using metallic floss in two contrasting colors, gold for hanging the tassel, lilac for the tassel itself.
  • a bead with a hole just wide enough to hold 12 strands of floss. (here a size #8 crystal seed bead with a metallic core)
  • a needlethreader for threading the bead onto the floss, ideally an extra long one such as the ones used for punchneedle embroidery
  • sharp scissors

Threading the bead onto the floss:

  • Cut a length of floss for hanging the tassel (at least 12 inches / 30 cm long)
  • Thread the bead onto the threader
  • Open the eye of the needlethreader and tread floss through
  • Pull needlethreader out, your bead is threaded!

Winding the tassel:

  • Wind the thread 3 or 4 times around 3 fingers
  • Slip the thread off your fingers and pinch it between your thumb and index, holding the top loop open

Forming the top of the tassel:
  • Come out of hole from back with the thread you are using for hnging the tassel
  • Go round the back
  • Slip back into hole from front

Securing the top end of the tassel with  a knot:

  • Pull tight on both ends

Threading bead through top of tassel:

  • Push needlethreader through bead and thread the other end of floss though the eye of the needlethreader. Pull out. The bead now sits on both threads
  • Move bead down towards tassel top, pull tight again on both ends, then make a knot above the bead.
  • Using a needle, slip the knot down so the bead fits snuggly between both knots

Trimming the tassel

  • Trim to desired length
  • You're done!

A biscornu pattern by Tam's CreationsThese miniature tassels are great for decorating cardsmenus, gift tags and other giftwrapping. They are also perfect for use in any type of hanging ornaments such as biscornus, humbugs, zigouigoui, door hangers, etc.

The tassels are gorgeous when used with metallics because they have a glamourous feel. We like DMC's huge choice of colors in the Light Effects range. You can also try the Satin floss for it's silky look.
Make them in any shape - extra short or extra long - in any mix of color: the tiny and multicolor ones are so cute! Add more beads, be creative!

Have a lot of fun!
