Cornflowers: a new design by Faby Reilly

Following the succesful Lavender and Poppy patterns, here is another humble wildflower, the cornflower, adorning Faby Reilly new series. The first item in the collection is a biscornu

With immense talent, the designer is able to capture in stitches all the delicacy of the flower, its soft blend of blues and purple, its finely indented petals, its tiny pistils. What a delight, as you stitch along, to see all these delightful details come to life on your fabric in a delicate mix of cross stitch and specialty stitches with a few seed bead accents.

Why not create your own buttons (that match your stitching)

button in the center of the Poppy biscornuWe had received several inquiries from stitchers, asking about the button in the center of the Poppy biscornu. Here's the answer: it's hand made with Fimo paste! Faby was looking for a button suitable for her latest piece and she thought, why not, let's try making one!

With the first one a success, Faby Reilly went ahead and made some more. In particular a pretty blue button that matches her latest pattern the Cornflower biscornu.
This time, however, she thoughfully created a tutorial to share with other stitchers. Now you can make your own, following her "how to create a cornflower shaped button" step-by-step guide.

pretty blue button that matches her latest pattern the Cornflower biscornuNow once you've started you won't be able to stop. With a little practice and creativity you can make your own buttons matching your favorite biscornu patterns. It's a great idea, isn't it? Have fun!

The tutorial is available on our free download page and - of course - you will also get it for free when you order the Cornflower biscornu chart. The tutorial will automatically added to your cart.

Look out for mischievous Easter bunnies!

You get the best deal when buying the whole series but you can also get each chart individually:

Ideas for stitching: Framing a biscornu pattern

fFraming instead of mounting as a biscornu Faby Reilly Poppy Biscornu patternVéronique R. came up with a totally unexpected idea: After stitching Faby Reilly's Poppy biscornu pattern, she found the stitched piece so lovely she decided not to mount it as a biscornu but to frame it instead.
The result is stunning. The stitched piece has a little bit of an Art deco touch that makes a perfect framed piece.

Tiny and cute: fitting a pattern onto a scissor fob

tiny and cute, stitched one over one thread"Don't bug me, I'm stitching" by Barbara Ana Here's an other idea we received from Jenifer:
"I made this adorable scissor fob out of the Barbara Ana "Don't Bug Me I'm Stitching" design.  I stitched it 1 over 1 on 28 count evenweave. I also used glow in the dark DMC for the eye's!
Barbara Ana designs are so colorful and fun."

What a great idea! If you're patient enough (and have a good eyesight) you can turn any medium size pattern into a miniature by stitching one over one. This  pattern is 41 x 61 stitches (w x h) and turned out  1 1/2 x 2 inches when stitched.

Falling in Love: latest Perrette Samouiloff's designs

With Valentine's day coming up, here is a great pattern you may want to stitch. It's full of tenderness and so delicate, like all other of designer Perrette Samouiloff's patterns. Our favorite part is the two children flying their heart shaped kites. The patterns come in two sizes as usual but if you want to stitch that scene, pick the larger one.
Don't forget you can stitch Perrette Samouiloff's patterns as a whole or use separate parts for cards or other projects, so it's great value too!

Home Decor: 17th century engravings in Cross Stitch

We are used to Helga Mandl's fun and whimsical patterns so it came as a little surprise to us to receive these fine reproductions of 17th century engravings. In fact Helga came across this pair of exceptional flower bouquets and set to reproduce them as cross stitch charts.
As for any reproduction of art in cross stitch, the quality of the charting is what makes the whole difference. Helga Mandl has made a great job of rendering these patterns in their original colors.

Brodi Broda: Welcome a new baby in style!

We have added a new batch of baby patterns to Brodi Broda's boutique. Florence Triboulot, the designer has a unique style and approach to design. A young mother but also a kindergarten teacher, she loves children and you can tell in the way she captures their joyful spirit in her designs.
Color plays a crucial role in her designs and though some may consider the patterns a little naive, we believe this is exactly what makes them charming and perfect for welcoming a new baby or decorating a toddler's room.

Refined and colorful, a stitcher's delight!
Check out Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin's latest designs

Cross stitching is all about detail and that's what keeps designer Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin happy. When she designed her "Spring in the garden" biscornu, not only did she very carefully pick her colors, as you would a bunch of flowers, but she also decided to stitch her creation on a slightly iridescent Aida, with mother-of-pearl filaments running through the weave. When she made her "Rose hearts scissor case", a contemporary interpretation of an old fashioned rose garland, she chose a tiny pink gingham motif that coordinates with the green gingham heart of her design. Finally, when she designs her popular Red monochrome series, you can trust that she will use her favorite "nuanced" red red floss that adds color and life to her design.

A new free tutorial: how to make a lined scissor case

step by step instructions for making a lined scissor caseWhen we saw the refinement of Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin's scissor cases (she has 3 of those designs already) we asked her if she could provide step by step instructions for making a lined scissor case and she very gracefully accepted. Not only is it very detailed, with tips for limiting the amount of fabric that piles up close to the tip of the case, it's also extremely easy to make. Marie-Anne uses a simple backstitch contour and uses this to guide the assembly. So there is virtually no "sewing", only simple whipstitch. These instructions are free for you to download on our Stitcher resources page with any other free tutorials offered by our designers.

Barbara Ana: inimitable style

You can recognize a great cross stitch designer when you can immediately identify the author of a pattern by looking at their work. Barbara Ana, while having just recently started designing professionally, is definitely one of the great upcoming designers bringing new talent and creativity to cross stitch.
On top of her inimitable style and vibrant colors, she has something that is very hard to define, but that a stitcher will immediately be aware of when stitching her designs: the art of making every part of the cross stitching interesting to stitch.  The "fun" element of stitching does not follow any specific rules. It's for a designer to "feel" and for a stitcher to experience.
Try one of her patterns and you'll see for yourself!

Finishing techniques: a recipe book

Finishing techniques: a recipe bookIn our last newsletter we asked those of you who had great creative ideas to share them with all of us. We were delighted to receive some very original ideas for finishing a stitched piece and hope to get some more soon.
Don't forget to send us your photos!

Maria created a personalized recipe book for her sister: learn the story and discover the great ideas she had, using 3 different charts.
>> Finishing ideas: Maria's recipe book

Thank you so much Maria!

For the occasion, Barbara Ana created a special design at Maria's request: the "male version" of Kiss the cook. We're sure plenty of stitchers will be delighted to stitch him too!

 Finishing techniques

Finishing techniques for your stitched piecesWe occasionally receive from you some great photos of your finished pieces, and we are amazed at how creative you can be at finding ideas for displaying your stitching.
Whether you frame your projects, turn them into cushions, bags, pouches, or what have you,  there seems to be no end to your creativity.
This led to the idea that we could open a gallery of photos on Creative Poppy's
website and feature some of your best ideas for finishing projects so that you could share them with others.
If you have stitched one of our patterns and would like it displayed on our website, please send us a photo using our
contact form and select "Finished pieces: I'd like
to share my photo". If you wish, you can add a small comment about the project
(how you got the idea, what's its for, tips etc.).

We look forward to receiving some great ideas and sharing them with you all!

For all pictures selected for our "finishing techniques" section we will give you one free pattern by the same designer.

Welcome Sylvie Teytaud,
the latest designer to join Creative Poppy's website!

New cross stitch patterns by designer Sylvie TeytaudYou'll love Sylvie Teytaud's fresh and very feminine approach to cross stitch design. Sylvie can not only stitch, she can draw and paint and it certainly shows in her patterns.
Sylvie is already well known in Europe for her pattern books, especially her fairies so it seemed only natural to introduce these patterns first. More of course will follow soon.

Our favorite fairy is featured to your left. She watches over our beautiful planet (and the planet certainly needs her!). Help her spread the message "Look after your planet".

Biscornus:
Step-by-step instructions (compare two mounting techniques)

Mounting a biscornu with two squares of needlework fabric The most current technique for mounting a biscornu is to stitch two pieces of fabric, outline the border in cross stitch or backstitch and whipstitch the two pieces together to mount the biscornu. Barbara Ana, (who designs some of the most popular biscornus patterns) had already made some excellent instructions with step by step photos available to all on our website.

Mounting a biscornu using a piece of color coordinated fabric
Together with her lastest biscornus patternsTam's Creation is suggesting an alternative method for mounting a biscornu using color coordinated fabric for the back. This can look real pretty if you choose a fabric that matches the color of your threads. You can also add trimmings and other embellishments.

Mounting a biscornu using a piece of color coordinated fabric for the back instead of regular needlework fabric  (instructions by  Tam's Creations)

Thanks to both designers, you can download free step-by-step instructions for mounting the biscornus, in either technique.

Reproduction samplers by Muriel Brunet

M.B. 1841, an antique sampler ftom Muriel Brunet's collectionHave you ever seen Muriel Brunet's remarkable private collection of antique samplers? Over the years, she has collected the most beautiful stitched pieces. Every one of them has it's own personality and specificities. You can sense if the stitcher was very young or more experienced. You can feel when the stitcher was very creative, letting her imagination guide her. You can see which of these stitchers was the most precise in her use of her precious silk thread. Every one of these stitched pieces is like reading a book and learning more about the stitcher.
With immense patience, spending hours over each of them, Muriel Brunet has transcribed these pieces into modern charts, with very thorough explanations,  also providing her own modern stitched interpretation of the work.

Four new Reproduction Samplers have just been added to the collection, each with a special personality and style:

Josephine 1876 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionJosephine 1876 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionThis sampler dates back to 1876. The stitcher was very precise in her choice and use of her precious silk threads, varying the number of strands and the quality of the threads to create dimensional effects.
The two birds add a lot of charm to the composition. Shown here is the modern rendering (to view the original, click on the image to see the product detail).

Countryside sampler dated 1872 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionCountryside sampler dated 1872 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionCountryside sampler dated 1872 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionSomewhat faded, the original sampler was stitched on canvas. The colors have the same old-fashioned appeal in the new piece, though it is stitched on white linen.

Small German sampler 1897 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionSmall German sampler 1897 - reproduction sampler - Muriel Brunet CollectionProbably the work of a very yound girl, this sampler is charming in it's simplicity. The red thread of the original sampler has faded over the years and the canvas is a little stained but you can easily imagine this young stitcher struggling a little with her letters at first but finally proudly dating and signing her piece with ornemental initials. 1897 - Germany.

R. Werner 1907 - Germany - Reproduction sampler - Muriel brunet collectionAn alphabet sampler that doubles as a stitch sampler, this piece is a rare blue (most samplers were traditionnaly stitched in red). One of its special features is a series of stitches of increasing complexity, including darning stitches, one of them with an interesting chevron motif.
