Take a close look at this pattern, as if strolling in a beautifully designed formal garden, complete with carefully clipped boxwood hedges, sprouting fountains and carefully arranged flowerbeds, bursting with color. The overall design of the pattern consists of two overlaping squares, forming a star shape, hence the name of the pattern.

Like such a garden, each element of this pattern is carefully designed to work as an interesting part in itself, yet contributing to the design as a whole. Tam's Creations, the designer, worked the pattern mostly in cross stitch, making it easy to stitch but added an element of blackwork that lends extra refinement and lightness to the whole.

The pattern can be stitched in DMC floss colors as listed on the chart or as a monochrome pattern. It can also be stitched in your own palette of overdyed colors if you want to express some creativity. The pattern lends itself very well to this kind of adaptation.

We love the exquisite detail of these three fine china cups, in a lovely contrast of soft powdery blue and pale yellows, as well as the very fine lacework of the white doilies. This needlework project combines cross stitch and delicate lace-like effects in a combination of backstitch, French Knots and Algerian eyelets. Includes some beading detail.

'Hope'  is inspired by the poem, Light Shining in Darkness, by William Cowper. Cowper experienced many dark days in his life, and yet he also knew that '..... Sometimes a Light Surprises...'

Here is the fourth in a series of attractive Xmas ornaments that display three different stitched sides - a very original shape designed by Faby Reilly. The other matching ornaments are Papa Noël, Maman Noël and Rudolf the reindeer (see two of these below).

Elrick looks really cute in his green hat with tiny pointy ears sticking out. The second side features Elrik's elaborate shoes hanging on a nail. They are with adorned with bells (which are rendered with golden seedbeads) . The third side shows some of his tools because he's a really busy fellow you'll find!

Antique Rose Alphabet
REPRODUCTION SAMPLER CHARTED BY MURIEL BERCEVILLE - COUNTED CROSS STITCH 

This monogram alphabet was used as a guide for stitching initials on household linen. Young girls, at the beginning of the 20th century, would learn to stitch at school. They would reproduce series of letters and numbers on small canvases, using red thread. Red was not only a symbol of life, if was also a colorfast color that would best resist heavy laundering. These canvases were used as samples and would be transmitted from one generation to another.

The original piece was stitched on canvas with red cotton thread. This color was the original “Turkish red” also called “Andrinople red” and corresponds to DMC 321.

Together with this alphabet design is an extra "rose wreath pattern", a modern pattern created by the designer to accomodate the initials. You can use one of the monograms and stitch it in the center of the wreath or alternatively stitch a tiny rose. The wreath is stitched over two threads. However the inner part (monogram or rose) is stitched over one thread which created a very refined effect.

Note letter "I" and "W" are missing. This was current with early samplers where letters “I” and “J” were often merged (as were letters “V” and “W”).

Antique sampler: "C. Mathy 1878"

This very refined antique sampler is a heirloom piece. It was stitched in 1878 by a young lady who signed her name, C. Mathy. She used a 33ct silk fabric canvas and silk thread. The motifs and colors used are quite soft and romantic.

Cross stitch this design on linen fabric, over two threads. The small alphabet at the bottom is stitched however over one thread and the pink alphabet is in backstitch.

The antique sampler pictured here is an exceptional antique stitched piece  from Muriel Brunet's private collection.

Most samplers have the same typical layout: the top part includes an alphabet, the remaining part is decorated with symbols and a pretty border runs all around the piece. The way these young ladies would choose their motifs reflects their moral and religious education as well as their surroundings. There are many references to Christ (heart, M for the Virgin Mary), insects (butterflies), animals (birds, dogs), flowers (carnations, roses).

This is a remarkable sampler with the most gorgeous border of red poppies running all around the stitched piece.

A hare, goat, deer and poppy border adorn this sampler inspired by "Berlin Embroidery". Berlin Embroidery was introduced by a German printer and rapidly spread throughout Europe. Known as "broadsheets" and hand painted for color, this new technique provided striking visual alternatives to existing sampler designs. Most popular themes were flowers, wreaths, baskets, animals and scenes of children playing. Berlin Embroidery was used for both cross stitch and tapestry.

Josephine reproduction sampler 1876

The original piece is an antique sampler that was stitched in 1876 by Joséphine Pichat.It is of French origin (from an area close to the Alps).

The original piece (shown below right) is quite sophisticated in its use of threads. It was stitched on linen fabric using a silk thread. The birds were stitched with a Silk Chenille thread that added a dimensional effect to the stitched piece.The pretty lace-like border alternates parts stitched in one and two strands.

While taking into account the color of the background fabric, the reproduction chart's color palette remains very similar to the original colors. A few adjustments were made to the composition to allow for symmetry and more regular spacing but the overall “spirit” is very close to the original.

The antique sampler pictured (above and top right) is an alphabet sampler that would serve as a template for the letters used for stitching initials on household linen. It also includes different variations stitches such as running stitch, backstich, halfstitches at different angles. Most interesting is a series of 3 darning or needleweave stitches at the bottom of the piece. Here again, there are different variations over one and two threads, with increasing complexity.  
Young girls, at the beginning of the 20th century, would learn to stitch at school. They would reproduce series of letters and numbers on small canvases, using red thread. Blue and green ones are more rare but can be found in Germany, such as this one stitched by R. Werner in 1907.
The modern reproduction (lower right) was stitched using an overdyed blue silk thread.

Here a new creative idea brought to you by designer Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin. Why not stitch your very own set of potholders?

The pattern includes two large square motifs, that can easily be mounted as potholders once you have cross stitched them. All you need to do is add some padding,  a pretty matching piece of fabric for the back, and finish with a piece of bias or rickrack for hanging. The set also includes a little mini motif that is very versatile and can be used for fridge magnets, napkin rings, or why not combine four of them to make an extra potholder?

The pattern is designed in red, using one DMC Color Variations floss and one darker matching red. You could easily use other floss colors and match your own kitchen color scheme.

Here's a fun alphabet for stitching the name of a little boy or girl. It has many colorful kites flying in the wind. All are different and interesting to cross stitch. Each letter is an independet "cube". You can combine these letters to form names or words such as in the example opposite with the name "Joseph".

We suggest printing out an extra copy of the chart pages so you can cut up and combine letters.

The pattern is designed to be stitched on a white background, filling in the background of the cubes with blue. You could however easily transpose the chart to use a color fabric and stitch the letters in white instead.

Here's a fun picture dictionary pattern with some well chosen objects the kids will love (G is for Ghost, I is for Ice cream...).

You can stitch it as it is and frame it for the nursery or playroom. You could also cross stitch some of the items and make a lovely textile picture book, to read to baby. The kids are back to school! It's time to have a little fun with this "chalkboard alphabet". You can stitch it "as is" or create your own text such as "Back to school" (see opposite). Note some of the quirky letters (especially C and S)!

For best results, stitch it on black Aida and use a black background when mounting so that the white holes don't show behind. Depending on your fabric, you might want to use three strands of floss to obtain better coverage. Test first on a small piece of fabric.

Here's a new motif in Faby Reilly's exquisite collection of wildflowers. It adorns a biscornu which can be used as a paper weight, a pin-cushion or can be filled with pot pourri to serve as a pretty scented sachet.

The range of embroidery floss colors are a lovely warm yellow and the heart of the flower is embellished with tiny golden seed beads.

The instructions for mounting the biscornu come with the cross stitch chart.

There is a lovely felt flower used in place of a button in the middle of the biscornu. The instructions for making the flower are also incuded with the pattern however you may also substitute it with a button or bead of your choice.

Gone fishing - color version (large pattern)

Look at these children having a happy time at the seaside. They are fishing for every possible kind of fish, some for lobster, others for shrimp. Two more children are spreading out fish nets while yet another boy has just caught a big fish with his fishing rod.

This is the full color version of the pattern, in a lovely palette of blue, green and orange floss. Also available  is a very different interpretation of this pattern entirely stitched in blue monochrome.

Designer Perrette Samouiloff makes an expert use of stitches (in particular a number of three-quarter stitches in combination with cross stitch and backstitch) to render the detail of each fish, and of the light playing on their scales.

Baby at the Zoo  (large pattern)

Baby's having fun on his first visit to the zoo. Spot him holding a red balloon among the giraffes, elephants, lions, parrots, monkeys, bears and all other wild animals.

Designer Perrette Samouiloff has created a very sweet composition of animals and children that will lend itself well to plenty of different applications for babies: you can stitch the pattern as a whole or use elements to decorate bibs, afghans, T shirts (using waste canvas), terry towels and many more items that will make great gifts.

There's some interesting detail to stitch such as the peacocks crest (woorked in longstitches and French knots) as well as the parrots beaks  ( worked in three-quarter stitches). These are the kind of details that provide extra definition and will make the piece stand out once stitched.

Tam's Creations has done it again!
After coming up with the HUGE IDEA of a Biggie Biscornu, here is another of these fabulous cushions.

It's big yet quick to stitch because the designer has chosen a 6ct Aida fabric that's very quick to cover. The chart only measures 150 x 150 stitches so it doesn't take any longer than stitching a medium size project. It's real easy too because it's only cross stitches stitched using all 6 strands of floss. You will need a piece of 6ct Aida at least 30 x 30" in size.

Tam used a lace border for the sides of the cushion that reinforces the romantic feel. The back of the cushion is in a matching pink fabric.

The very young are having fun on their first day at the zoo.

Designer Perrette Samouiloff has created a very sweet composition of animals and children that will lend itself well to plenty of different applications for babies: you can stitch the pattern as a whole or use elements to decorate bibs, afghans, T shirts (using waste canvas), terry towels and many more items that will make great gifts.

There's some interesting detail to stitch such as the parrots beaks (worked in three-quarter stitches) and the detail of the railing. These are the kind of details that provide extra definition and will make the piece stand out once stitched.
