Flowers within a flowers, this blackwork design by Tams Creations is a rich combination of tiny flower motifs, worked in backstitch, and making up a larger 8-petal flower shape.

Interestingly, the designer does not suggest any specific floss colors to use. Rather, she suggests you follow your own inspiration to add colors to this pattern and create your very own giant flower.

The pattern of the photo was stitched by Linda using solid green floss for the leafs and stem elements and a colorful multicolor floss from Polstitches for the flower elements. What will your own choice of floss colors be?

Take a close look at this pattern, as if strolling in a beautifully designed formal garden, complete with carefully clipped boxwood hedges, sprouting fountains and carefully arranged flowerbeds, bursting with color. The overall design of the pattern consists of two overlaping squares, forming a star shape, hence the name of the pattern.

Like such a garden, each element of this pattern is carefully designed to work as an interesting part in itself, yet contributing to the design as a whole. Tam's Creations, the designer, worked the pattern mostly in cross stitch, making it easy to stitch but added an element of blackwork that lends extra refinement and lightness to the whole.

The pattern can be stitched in DMC floss colors as listed on the chart or as a monochrome pattern. It can also be stitched in your own palette of overdyed colors if you want to express some creativity. The pattern lends itself very well to this kind of adaptation.

Here are some lovely and very versatile mini Christmas motifs that can be used either:

- for making needlework accessories such as scissor cases, scissor fobs and biscornu shaped pin cushions

and

- for making 2 different shapes of Christmas ornaments: a larger cone-shaped ornament to fill with sweets and a smaller square cushion shape.

The pattern includes 7 different motifs to cross stitch (3 large and 4 smaller squares) as well as detailed instructions for mounting eirther the scissor case or the cone-shaped ornament. These patterns are also ideal for making biscornus.

While the patterns are quite small, they are rich in detail, with a combination of Cross stitch, Backstitch, French knots and some lighter Three-quarter cross stitches that are used in contrast with the full cross stitches

Hortulus was a poem written by a German monk, Walafrid Strabo, in the 9th century. The name translates to 'little garden' and refers to the herbs grown for the order's apothecary monk.

The cente image is an ancient one used in some of the oldest filet crochet, but here he is surrounded by an art deco style floral border.

Maybe these wood violets are what he needs for that remedy he is so deeply pondering as he gazes at his fire?

Here is the fourth in a series of attractive Xmas ornaments that display three different stitched sides - a very original shape designed by Faby Reilly. The other matching ornaments are Papa Noël, Maman Noël and Rudolf the reindeer (see two of these below).

Elrick looks really cute in his green hat with tiny pointy ears sticking out. The second side features Elrik's elaborate shoes hanging on a nail. They are with adorned with bells (which are rendered with golden seedbeads) . The third side shows some of his tools because he's a really busy fellow you'll find!

Here a new creative idea brought to you by designer Marie-Anne Réthoret-Mélin. Why not stitch your very own set of potholders?

The pattern includes two large square motifs, that can easily be mounted as potholders once you have cross stitched them. All you need to do is add some padding, a pretty matching piece of fabric for the back, and finish with a piece of bias or rickrack for hanging. The set also includes a little mini motif that is very versatile and can be used for fridge magnets, napkin rings, or why not combine four of them to make an extra potholder?

The pattern is designed in red, using one DMC Color Variations floss and one darker matching red. You could easily use other floss colors and match your own kitchen color scheme.

This ornament in part of a series of 3 coordinated humbug patterns designed by Faby Reilly. The intricate cross stitch design is a pointsettia garland delicately curling around the humbug shape. The pattern is reinforced by some backstitch (presented on a separate chart), some seed beads as well as some star shaped specialty stitches worked in golden metallic embroidery floss.

The chart includes some useful step by step instructions and pictures for both the specialty stitches and for making the humbug shape. Faby Reilly, the designer, as also made the humbug instructions available to all and you can download them so you can get a feel of what the project is like.
